What an amazing night for American Idol; the girls have done season six proud by not only picking up where the guys fell flat but a few gals took it above and beyond and have proven why they are there. The top four performers of the night, in my not so humble opinion, were Lakisha Jones, Melinda Doolittle, Sabrina Sloan, and Jordin Sparks. Lakisha Jones left me breathless – as Randy Jackson said “Jennifer Hudson, watch out!” Even Simon Cowell was lovin’ Lakisha saying “I’m very tempted to say to 23 people ‘book your plane ticket home.’” Sounds like Cowell has a favorite! Lakisha was by far the shining star of the night but Doolittle, Sloan, and Sparks’ performances were all notches above what the best male performer was last night.
Jordin Sparks, at only 17 years old, is the youngest in the competition this year. However she doesn’t have a young voice – her voice is big. When the judges caution contestants to not pick songs bigger than they are (thinking Antonella Barba going for an Aerosmith tune here) they tell Sparks to find that big song and sing it! She sang “Gimme One Reason” by Tracy Chapman and I think she did a fantastic job. Hopefully next week she’ll pick a big song and show the judges exactly what she can do with that fantastic voice of hers.
